SOLAR POWER UGANDA SCHOOL PROJECT

You can help provide a source of power for students, schools, cooking ...

Join Compassion Care and individuals all over the world as we work to provide a power source for St. Catherine's College in Kampala, Uganda.

The country has a very poor electrical power system and the government does nothing to repair it to a useable source. The children and schools suffer most as the schools cannot continue to raise tuition fees to cover the costs of fuel for generators, or generators themselves. Imagine, if you will, a USA school without power - how would your student do any science or lab work? or Study at home in the dark with only a parafin candle for light? Or the safety of girls living in dormitories without light, alarms and etc.?

This is what St. Catherine's has been doing these last years, along with no power for cooking for over 500 students, plus staff. They spend time cutting down precious trees, chopping them, then cooking over open fires to provide a minimum of 2 meals a day. Again, imagine cooking over a hot, open fire on a very hot, 100 degree day. This is how it is now accomplished.

They do have some generators, yet fuel oil prices have risen (as gasoline and fuel here in the US) to a point, they can no longer afford that cost.

Solar is the answer. They have almost continual sunshine, and solar cell panels have come down in price. An estimate given to St. Catherine's Board of Directors, for the dormitories, the school buildings, the kitchen area, is quoted at approximately $50,000. Again, the school does not have the funds to implement this program, and the government will provide nothing for any of the school systems.

Even the businesses have to provide their own power for store lights, computers, and everything that would use elecricity. They can do it by raising prices and hoping customers can pay. The schools do not have that opportunity as most families already cannot afford the tuition fees that are charged. Many students have had to drop out of school and that is a crime against fighting poverty and / or obtaining an education.

What is needed?
  • Financial Aid for this project
  • A Solar supplier willing to donate Cell Panels
  • or at least lower the price...
  • Prayer
