The following is an excerpt from one letter of the Director of Gabba Centre, sent to Jim Haverlock on January 8, 2008. As of now there are twelve (12) children with this "challenge" of being born deaf and dumb. The letter speaks of just 6 of these children, who are from one family. The father abandoned his children and wife, blaming the mother for having given birth to "disabled" kids and he wanted no more of it. The mother has no education and has done the best she can to raise them, feed them, and has been ostracized by her community. Many other children with this challenge are dumped on the streets by parents who have no means, nor the ability to care for them. Can you just imagine being deaf and dumb, a young child, trying to survive? Eating from garbage? Wondering what to do? Where to go? How to communicate your needs?
One woman, Mrs. Anne Ddamba, took it upon herself to care for this family of 6 deaf/dumb children and then started the Gabba Centre. Quickly 6 more children were found on the streets.
Quote from the Director of Gabba Centre letter dated 1/8/2008:
You will recall that you sent me a wonderful Christmas gift and I was able to buy some things for the children. So on New Year's day, my husband advised that I take the 6 children to their mother to give her a chance of starting a year with her children. I therefore hired a matatu (passenger Taxi) and off we left for the village.
For your information, before I took over the responsibility of looking after this family, people of this village used to isolate the family and it was because of this isolation that I felt so concerned and decided to take them in as part of my family. Now after 6 months with me, things have changed completely, the whole family is out going and to my surprise children of the village have started to cooperate with the poor woman well as the children can now play with the Dumb and Deaf children. While I was discussing with the mother, the girls were busy skipping the ropes, while the boys were busy playing football. It was so nice and beautiful to see the joy that the children had and the way they tried to make some noise. I am so happy to be of service to these children and for sure, I have learnt one thing that I wish to share with you. A successful person in life is one that gives love and services to others. It is not how much money you have or how educated you are. The important thing is how you use your talents to help those in need. So the little that I have done for these children has brought a lot of joy to them and I can assure you that my efforts have made me very proud.
Anyway, I should thank the almighty for he has brought you my friend in to the lives of these children. We need you if we are to continue with this good work. Now that Gabba Centre is operation and your hard work has started bringing in some funds, I believe it is a calling from God and I am going to put all my resources in to Gabba Centre.
End Quote.
