Miriam is the 6th child in a family of 7 children. She is also the 5th child to be born deaf, with a severe level of deafness.
The father abondoned the family using the excuse that his wife was the fault of these bad children. He took another wife and has not bothered to check on his children in all this time.
Mariam is active both in and out side the class. She plays with all children indiscriminately. She has learned to support herself by washing a few clothes, fetching water, bathing herself, etc. She understands sign language very well and communicates both in sign language and gestures. She is acedemically promising and well behaved. She is very caring especially to her sisters who are also deaf.
Mudondo Zabinah, the mother to six deaf children and one with hearing, shows a lot of parental love to her children. This is possible because she knows she is a single parent, and a poor peasant farmer. She can only afford to come and visit her children at Gabba Centre, or the learning school, bringing them g-nuts and maize. Mudondo lives at Kibibi-Jinja.
